<p>We should withdraw our combat troops by early 2008, except for a limited number necessary to keep training Iraqis and to deny terrorists a sanctuary.</p>
<p>And we should do that in the context of a comprehensive political, diplomatic and economic strategy that gives us a chance to leave Iraq without leaving chaos behind.</p>

Not a single person has been convicted of a crime, and three men died of apparent suicides. Today marks five years since the US first transferred men to indefinite and arbitrary detention. Five years of lawlessness is enough – demand that the detention facilities at Guantanamo be closed.</p>

<span style="font: normal bold 18px/32px georgia,arial,serif;">Call for the Closure of Guantanamo</span></a></p>
<p>I urge you to take all necessary steps to close the detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Over the past five years, the US has detained over 700 men from over 45 nations in Guantanamo. Despite numerous allegations of torture and ill-treatment, international condemnation, three deaths in custody, several unfavorable court decisions, and not a single conviction of a detainee for any crime, your administration has responded by building more permanent facilities. No amount of permanent structures will make the detentions at Guantanamo lawful – it is time to shut it down.</p>
<p>Guantanamo has come to symbolize US human rights violations committed in the name of the “war on terror.” People currently in Guantanamo have been subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. Some have been subjected to unfair trial proceedings. Some have been rendered to third countries that torture. Still others have been disappeared into secret CIA prisons. By continuing to insist that the United States has the right to detain people indefinitely without access to courts and outside the rule of law, you have placed the United States squarely on the wrong side of history and in defiance of international law.</p>
<p>The America I believe in would close Guantanamo and lead the world on human rights. Five years of lawlessness is too long. All those detained in Guantanamo should be charged immediately and given a fair trial, or released unconditionally and not sent anywhere where they would face torture or other human rights abuses. It is time to bring America back into the community of nations as a country that upholds human rights and the rule of law.</p>

A <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16578451/from/ET/">poll taken after his speech</a> shows 70% - 30% that people oppose sending more troops. This along with <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16579285/from/ET/">Republicans taking a stand against him</a> clearly shows he <b><i>is not</i></b> listening and <b><i>will not</i></b> listen to us without extreme pressure.<br /><br />
Not much can be further said about what this madman is capable of doing. The time to stop the repeat of mistakes he has made over and over is at hand. We must take every opportunity to let our lawmakers know that we want it stopped and our troops brought home. I urge you to join me in this effort... - fc

<p>Washington, D.C. - The nation's largest grassroots peace organization today condemned President Bush's "new strategy" for Iraq as out of touch with reality and a recipe for continued violence, and urged Congress to act decisively to stop the planned escalation of the war.</p>
<p>"Mr. Bush says that 'failure in Iraq would be disastrous,' yet it is his own policy of invasion and occupation that has failed so miserably, and that is precisely why we are seeing the disastrous consequences in Iraq and the Middle East today," said Kevin Martin, Executive Director of Peace Action. "He talks about sending in more U.S. troops to quell the insurgency, yet it is the very presence of our troops, seen as an occupying force by most Iraqis, that sparked the insurgency. He talks about the war in Iraq as part of a war on terror, yet he ignores the unanimous conclusion of his own intelligence agencies, in a National Intelligence Estimate leaked last fall, that the U.S. presence in Iraq has made the terrorist problem worse."</p>
<p>"Mr. Bush is willing to ignore the clear reality on the ground, disregard the advice of his own generals, and dismiss the will of the American people, who oppose this escalation. That is why it is now time for Congress to step in and stop the war."</p>
<blockquote style="background-color:#ffffff !important; color:#800;">

<p>I am writing to express my outrage and distress that after four years of a failed war and military occupation in Iraq, President Bush is trying to send even more U.S. troops there. I urge you in the strongest possible terms to do everything you can to stop this escalation.</p>
<p>As a supporter of Peace Action, and a deeply concerned citizen, I want you to know that a non-binding resolution is not enough - since Mr. Bush clearly doesn't care about either the facts on the ground or the wishes of the American public, who strongly oppose such an escalation, you must take responsibility to proactively stop this escalation.</p>
<p>More U.S. troops have not stopped the violence in Iraq before, and will not now. In fact, they will only provide more targets, and instigate more resistance. The only answer is to pull U.S. troops out, in a phased, responsible manner, and engage all parties and all of Iraq's neighbors in a process to stabilize the country and end the violence.</p>
<p>But above all, no more U.S. troops should be sent to Iraq. I urge you to do everything in your power to stop this.</p>
<p>Please let me know what you plan to do about this most crucial of issues.</p>

<p><b>Dear Representative and Senators,</b></p>
<p>I am opposed to an escalation of the U.S. occupation in Iraq as President Bush is reportedly considering. Escalation is the wrong answer and should be off the table. Instead we should be working to end the war and start a responsible exit. The Congress should block the president's escalation. I urge you to support legislation that would do that.</p>

More now have died in Bush's War of Terror than did on 9-11. Bush's reaction to the mandate of the November 2006 Elections is to "Surge" ahead with more troops, more death, more dire consequences for which he has no answers. Hat Tip to Professor Marcus at <a href="http://takeitpersonally.blogspot.com/2006/12/2998-us-casualties-in-iraq-on-day.html" title="2998 U.S. casualties in Iraq on the day before New Years Eve">And, Yes, I DO Take It Personally</a> who reminded me of the need to show these figures.. The people have spoken out through the 2006 mid-term election. By voting out pro-war candidates and changing control over Congress, we have repudiated war policies and issued a mandate for new policies that promote peace and international cooperation. We insist that the newly elected Congress, in its earliest days in office, pass legislation requiring the prompt removal of all US troops from Iraq and discontinue funding for military purposes in Iraq except the safe withdrawal of all U.S. forces.

The people have spoken out through the 2006 mid-term election. By voting out pro-war candidates and changing control over Congress, we have repudiated war policies and issued a mandate for new policies that promote peace and international cooperation.<br /><br />
More and more of us understand that the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq was based on lies, that it was unjustified and illegal, and that it has sullied our reputation around the world and made us less safe at home. For months now, polls have shown that a majority of Americans (including active duty troops in Iraq) want the US troops to come home. Several polls have shown that the vast majority of Iraqis also want all foreign occupation forces to leave their country.
<br /><br />
In order to restore the bonds of trust between the people--who want a swift end to the Iraq war--and our elected representatives--who have not represented the will of the majority with regards to Iraq--the peace-loving people of the United States issue the following call:<br /><br />
We insist that the newly elected Congress, in its earliest days in office, pass legislation requiring the prompt removal of all US troops from Iraq and discontinue funding for military purposes in Iraq except the safe withdrawal of all U.S. forces. <br /><br />
Additionally, Congress should:
<br /><br />
- Make real its existing stated commitment to no permanent US military bases in Iraq.<br />
- Support an Iraqi-led reconciliation process to shape a peaceful post-occupation transition.<br />
- Investigate and punish companies engaged in illegal war profiteering.<br />
- Commit significant funds to the reconstruction of Iraq, under the control and direction of Iraqis.<br />
- Provide funding for full benefits, adequate healthcare, and other support for returning servicemen and women.<br />
- Make every effort possible to ensure the peaceful resolution of conflicts with Iran and North Korea.<br /><br />

This will be an important statement that will co-exist with official hearings into the NeoCon War Machine if Democrats win control of congress.

As I have expressed on my other blogs... Please help vote these people out of office and help pave the way for accountability and constructive alternatives to the ever worsening conditions in Iraq...<br /><br />

<br /><br />
Many active duty, reserve, and guard service members are concerned about the war in Iraq and support the withdrawal of U.S. troops. The Appeal for Redress provides a way in which individual service members can appeal to their Congressional Representative and US Senators to urge an end to the U.S. military occupation. The Appeal messages will be delivered to members of Congress at the time of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January 2007.
<br /><br />
The wording of the Appeal for Redress is short and simple. It is patriotic and respectful in tone.
<p style="margin:12px 0 12px 28px; color:#000000;">
As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq . Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home.

Attorneys and counselors experienced in military law are available to help service members who need assistance in countering any attempts to suppress this communication with members of Congress.
<br /><br />
Several members of Congress have expressed interest in receiving the Appeal for Redress.

By Jonathan S. Landay<br />
McClatchy Newspapers<br /><br />
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney has confirmed that U.S. interrogators subjected captured senior al-Qaida suspects to a controversial interrogation technique called "water-boarding," which creates a sensation of drowning.
<br /><br />
Cheney indicated that the Bush administration doesn't regard water-boarding as torture and allows the CIA to use it. "It's a no-brainer for me," Cheney said at one point in an interview.
<br /><br />
Cheney's comments, in a White House interview on Tuesday with a conservative radio talk show host, appeared to reflect the Bush administration's view that the president has the constitutional power to do whatever he deems necessary to fight terrorism.

<i>Just before Congress adjourned in the wee hours of Saturday morning, two bipartisan initiatives emerged to oppose the threatened U.S. attack on Iran, one led by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and the other led by Rep. Wayne Gilchrist (R-Md.). Kucinich introduced a resolution of inquiry demanding documents from the White House regarding such plans. The full text follows:</i></span>
<br /><br />
Requesting the President to provide to the House of Representatives certain documents in his possession relating to United States policy toward Iran.
<br /><br />
<i>Resolved</i>, That the President is requested to provide to the House of Representatives, not later than 14 days after the date of the adoption of this resolution, all documents in the possession of the President relating to--

(3) covert action (as defined in section 503 of the National Security Act of 1947 (50 U.S.C. 413b)) being conducted by any United States Armed Forces in Iran, and training by United States Armed Forces of any group or organization for the conduct of operations hostile to the current regime of Iran, including the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) and any individuals ever associated with MEK, and the Iranian Party of Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK) and any individuals ever associated with PJAK;<br /><br />

</p>
<i>Rep. Gilchrist issued the following press release, last Friday, under the headline "Gilchrest Asks the President To Open a Dialogue with Iran."</i>
<br /><br />
U.S. Rep. Wayne T. Gilchrest (R_Maryland_1st) is leading an effort in Congress to ask President Bush to begin talks with Iran as soon as possible in hopes of averting another conflict in the Middle East.
<br /><br />
In a letter sent to the President Friday, signed by 19 bipartisan members of the House, Gilchrest and his colleagues suggested that the last 26 years of a "no negotiation" policy has not yielded any positive results. By opening a dialogue with Tehran, the President can begin to try to solve this nuclear impasse diplomatically.
<br /><br />
"If we hope to convince the American people, our allies, and the international community that we are committed to resolving this matter diplomatically, the U.S. must open up direct diplomatic channels with Tehran," the letter stated.
<br /><br />
The letter also suggested that while talks with Iran's President may not be productive, there are other leaders and groups in Iran that would be receptive to such outreach.
"We remind you that decision-making power under Iran's government is diffuse. Although we are all familiar with the inflammatory rhetoric of President Ahmadinejad, there are certainly other significant government bodies in Iran that have demonstrated moderation and an eagerness for dialogue. We believe that such bodies should be sought out for engagement."
<br /><br />
There are seldom occasions in history where a great country should fear dialogue with a potential adversary. on the contrary, dialogue is needed to explain clearly the compelling nature of America's objectives in the Middle East. More than 25 years of isolating Iran has moved us farther from, not closer to, achieving these goals. No one can dispute that the U.S. has a strong track record of diplomatic successes in autocratic societies after opening negotiating channels.
<br /><br />
"We believe America's diplomats are the best in the world and should be allowed to apply their talents to our conflict with Iran. We therefore respectfully urge you to begin the process of holding direct talks with Iran as soon as possible."

<span style="font-size: 14pt"><strong> Silence in a Time of Torture is Complicity</strong> </p> </span>
<p>We have now come to a defining moment, where before the world's eyes the U.S. Congress is poised to legalize torture. We reject such a course outright. It does not represent us. </p>
<p>We remember the images from Abu Ghraib prison -- photos of depravity, even death. And what of the images we have never been shown from a world of even more disturbing and more "professional" horrors that have been concealed in secret prisons around the world? </p>
<p>To anyone of conscience, this is unacceptable. But this is exactly what your government will be making legitimate. With bi-partisan support, the "Military Commissions Act of 2006" will be made law unless people act to stop it. </p>
<p>Sold as a "compromise", this bill is <strong>fundamentally worse</strong> than what has gone before. </p>
<p>The bill takes what has existed in the shadowy world of clandestine action and now gives it the <strong>openly declared</strong> mantle of official, legal approval. While the compromise is being sold as complying with the Geneva Conventions, it gives the President huge freedom to, by executive order, define "special methods" of interrogation that HE feels "fit" that Convention. It removes the right of anyone to raise the Geneva Conventions in federal court to challenge government action against them. </p>
<p>The compromise allows the government the power to use confessions and other testimony derived from torture as evidence in criminal proceedings. The compromise officially, and legally, puts Congress on record approving that the president may, at his own discretion, declare anyone an "enemy combatant". This means the president can name anyone anywhere as such and remove them from the reach of family or legal counsel and hold them indefinitely without trial. It ends the Constitutional right of habeas corpus.</p>
<p> All this is now to be done openly, and in our name. All these actions -- and the Bush Regime which has commissioned war crimes -- must be brought to a halt. What is being met with silence in the halls of power must be manifested as a real opposition in the streets. At stake here is what kind of country and what kind of people we choose to be.</p>
<p> Let it not be said that the people did nothing when their government moved to make torture lawful. Let the world know that the people of this country did not acquiesce, but instead stood up and said
<p><b> “TORTURE DOES NOT REPRESENT US!</b> </p>

Would you have the courage to stand up and ask the President of the United States what was the noble cause that your son died for...?
<br /><br />
I actually credit her more than anyone else for creating the vessel that is the 21st Century Peace Movement. This is not to belittle all the other organizations listed on this page. I do think that her courage to go to Crawford TX during Bush's month long vacation in 2005 was unprecedented and so very timely. As I stated at the time, I think she was the driving force in causing Bush to run like the coward he is from a confrontation with her.
<br /><br />
This was perhaps the cause and effect that was the downfall of Bush. If you remember, Bush was eating cake with McCain and playing guitar while the people of New Orleans were drowning in the streets. His fear of Sheehan was the reason he bailed from Crawford for these photo ops. Also important to remember was the fact that all the puppetmasters for Bush were on vacation and Bush was left with the schedule they (Rove - Cheney) had worked out for him. He was on his own and for the first time the vast majority of this country saw what an empty suit he really is.
<br /><br />
He was still in the 'Hide from Cindy' mode when Katrina hit and because of the unexpected chain of events he was not smart enough on his own to figure out that he should get his a$$ down to New Orleans and take control of what has since been catagorized as the worst disaster in modern history.
<br /><br />
The tide of events that occured because of her efforts to confront Bush were not foreseen by his handlers and it eventually led to his decline in the polls and the beginning of Fall from Grace that Bush has incurred ever since. We all owe a great deal of respect to this outstanding American. - č

<b>'A Mother's Journey Through Heartache to Activism'</b>
<br /><br />
Cindy Sheehan<br />
Activist<br />
Monday, September 25, 2006; 1:00 PM
<br /><br />
Antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan was online Monday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. ET to discuss her new book, "Peace Mom: A Mother's Journey through Heartache to Activism." Sheehan describes the grief she felt after the death of her son, Casey Sheehan , in the spring of 2004 and how his death led to her controversial, highly publicized month-long demonstration in front of President Bush's Crawford, Tex. ranch last year.
<br /><br />
<b>Washington, D.C.</b>: Dear Ms. Sheehan: I honor your son, who made the ultimate sacrifice in dying for our country.
<br /><br />
I will not pretend to understand the loss you felt with the death of your son. But nor do I understand why your grief has manifested itself through a hatred for this country that your son sought to protect. Why is your anger not directed at the terrorists who seek to destroy this nation's soldiers and civilians?
<br /><br />
<b>Cindy Sheehan</b>: Well, I don't believe that my son died protecting our country; I believe he died for lies. It's been proven over and over again that George Bush and the neocons lied to us. Casey was not killed by a terrorist; he was killed by an insurgent, an Iraqi citizen who wanted him out of their country. I am not manifesting my grief as hatred for America. I love my country and I'm fighting to make my country better and I'm fighting so that no other mothers have to feel the pain that I'm feeling.
<br /><br />
Being against the government and being against the war is not being against America.
<br /><br />
<b>Annandale, Va.</b>: Do you believe George Bush is a greater threat to America than terrorism?
<br /><br />
<b>Cindy Sheehan</b>: Oh, absolutely. I believe that he has damaged our credibility in the world; he has increased, as I said earlier, the amount of jihadism in the world; he has made my children and my grandchildren more vulnerable -- not only physically but economically -- and our country used to be respected. Now we have no moral standing to tell other countries how they should behave.
<br /><br />
On Sept. 11, almost 3,000 of our citizens were tragically killed. Now over that amount of our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have been killed and tens of thousands of innocent people.

Do-It-Yourself Impeachment...</span><br /><br />
Impeach for Peace, a Minnesota-based impeachment group, has researched a method for impeaching the president using a little known and rarely used part of the Rules of the House of Representatives ("Jefferson’s Manual"). This document actually empowers individual citizens to initiate the impeachment process themselves.
<br /><br clear="all" />
"Jefferson's Manual" is an interpretive guide to parliamentary procedure, and is included (along with the Constitution) in the bound volumes of the Rules of the House of Representatives. The section covering impeachment lists the acceptable vehicles for bringing impeachment motions to the floor of the House.
<br /><br clear="all" />
Before the House Judiciary Committee can put together the Articles of Impeachment, someone must initiate the impeachment procedure. Most often, this occurs when members of the House pass a resolution. Another method outlined in the manual, however, is for individual citizens to submit a memorial for impeachment.

Bush is out of office. Something similar to this is what finally stopped the needless killing in Vietnam. Something like this is what it will take for the killing to stop in Iraq.
<br /><br />When they realise that we are out of their country, they will not be so easily induced to kill their fellow muslim. They can only expect what would come of any country torn in two pieces with the majority aligned with Iran. The kurds have their own problems with Turkey. The Sunni's are between a rock and a hard place.
<br /><br />The only sensible thing for us to do is get our people out of there. The sooner, the better for all concerned. - fc

Stop the madness! - Tell Congress to support H.R. 4232"><img align="left" style="margin:0 4px 0 0 !important;" src="http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y261/f4tc4t/pda2.gif" width="113" height="56" border="0" alt="PDA" /><span style="font: bold 16px verdana,arial,serif; color:#F63C1A;">PROGRESSIVE<br />DEMOCRATS<br />OF AMERICA</span></a>
<br /><br clear="all" />
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) has introduced H.R. 4232, the "End the War in Iraq Act of 2005". I implore you to co-sponsor it.
<br /><br />
The bill would allow Defense Dept. funds to be used only to provide for:
<br /><br />
1) the safe and orderly withdrawal of all troops; <br />
2) consultations with other governments, NATO and the UN regarding international
forces; <br />
3) financial assistance and equipment to either Iraqi security forces and/or international forces.
<br /><br />
In addition, the bill would not prohibit or restrict non-defense funding to carry out reconstruction in Iraq.
<br /><br />
It is time for Congress to embrace its responsibilty and put an end to this madness. To date there are 2600 dead U.S. troops, over 19,000 U.S. injured, over $300 billion in war costs, escalating acts of worldwide terrorism, an impending civil war in Iraq, and an emboldened Iran. It is clear that there exists no path to victory.
<br /><br />
Since President Bush is refusing to take steps to end the quagmire in Iraq, Congress must. I want my Representative to be part of the solution by co-sponsoring the McGovern resolution, H.R. 4232.

This issue is of such prime concern for the troops and the civilians that have been exposed to Depleted Uranium, the use of such similar weapons being a war crime.
<br /><br />This ostrich tactic of trying to ignore this problem has been the attitude of several administrations, not only for Bush amd Cheney. It is an outrage that weapons like this are used so hazardously. More attention to it should be a priority.
<br /><br />This issue has been smouldering on the public radar since the first Gulf War I. Now we are seeing people from 'Iraqi Freedom' suffering along with the thousands from the first war. - fc

NEW YORK -- It takes at least 10 minutes and a large glass of orange juice to wash down all the pills -- morphine, methadone, a muscle relaxant, an antidepressant, a stool softener. Viagra for sexual dysfunction. Valium for his nerves.
<br /><br />
Four hours later, Herbert Reed will swallow another 15 mg of morphine to cut the pain clenching every part of his body. He will do it twice more before the day is done.
<br /><br />
Since he left a bombed-out train depot in Iraq, his gums bleed. There is more blood in his urine, and still more in his stool. Bright light hurts his eyes. A tumor has been removed from his thyroid. Rashes erupt everywhere, itching so badly they seem to live inside his skin. Migraines cleave his skull. His joints ache, grating like door hinges in need of oil.
<br /><br />
Reed believes depleted uranium has contaminated him and his life. He now walks point in a vitriolic war over the Pentagon's arsenal of it -- thousands of shells and hundreds of tanks coated with the metal that is radioactive, chemically toxic, and nearly twice as dense as lead.
<br /><br />
Depleted uranium is the garbage left from producing enriched uranium for nuclear weapons and energy plants. It is 60 percent as radioactive as natural uranium. The United States has an estimated 1.5 billion pounds of it, sitting in hazardous waste storage sites across the country. Meaning it is plentiful and cheap as well as highly effective.
<br /><br />
"We all had migraines. We all felt sick," Reed says. "The doctors said, 'It's all in your head.' "
<br /><br />
Then the medic from their unit showed up. He too, was suffering. That made eight sick soldiers from the 442nd Military Police, an Army National Guard unit made up of mostly cops and correctional officers from the New York area.
<br /><br />
But the medic knew something the others didn't. Dutch marines had taken over the abandoned train depot dubbed Camp Smitty, which was surrounded by tank skeletons, unexploded ordnance and shell casings. They'd brought radiation-detection devices. The readings were so hot, the Dutch set up camp in the middle of the desert rather than live in the station ruins.

Take a look at <a href="http://bbsnews.net/article.php/20060812184342905">Resolution 1701</a>: it is quite a lengthy document, which goes well beyond the call for a cease-fire and lays the groundwork for a comprehensive solution to the current crisis in the Middle East – one in which Israel gains not an inch. If implemented – and that, of course, is the key – it endorses <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5256936.stm" title="The Seven Point Program">the seven-point program</a> of the Lebanese government, first put forward at the international <a href="http://usinfo.state.gov/xarchives/display.html?p=washfile-english&y=2006&m=July&x=20060726152716mlenuhret0.6171839">conference</a> of July 26. This means a <a href="http://www.infoisrael.net/cgi-local/text.pl?source=2/a/iii/130820061">mutual exchange</a> of prisoners – not only <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5171616.stm">the two Israeli soldiers</a>, but the <a href="http://www.arabicnews.com/ansub/Daily/Day/050803/2005080316.html">many Lebanese</a> still being held by the Israelis – and the return of the disputed <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shebaa_Farms">Shebaa Farms</a> enclave to Lebanon. Resolution 1701 also harkens back to the 1989 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taif_Agreement">Taif Agreement</a>, brokered by the Arab League, that put the West's imprimatur on the Syrian "occupation," ending the Lebanese civil war.
<br /><br clear="all" />
Remember, Hezbollah is <a href="http://www.cfr.org/publication/9155/#1">not</a> some foreign force, or even an Iranian "proxy," as <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/world/15089948.htm">the Israelis</a> (and George W. <a href="http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14305782/">Bush</a>) aver: it is a Lebanese institution, by far the best organized political force in the country – and one that now has the <a href="http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14207059/">overwhelming support</a> of the populace. The Israelis have not only lost militarily – in the sense that Hezbollah <a href="http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/world/4113493.html">fought the IDF to a draw</a> – they have also lost politically, within Lebanon, where they have alienated their former allies by <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/sns-ap-mideast-fighting-lahoud,1,6489734.story?coll=chi-news-hed">bombing Christian</a> neighborhoods.
<br /><br clear="all" />
The invasion also dealt a blow to <a href="http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=8730">the Israel lobby</a>'s <a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0809/dailyUpdate.html">efforts</a> to retain control of American policy in the Middle East at a time when that stranglehold is being <a href="http://www.antiwar.com/blog/2006/08/04/the-establishment-vs-the-neocons/">challenged</a> as never before. Though subjected to a <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/23/AR2006062301375_pf.html">sharp attack</a> by <a href="http://rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/1315">neoconservative guru</a> <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2006/08/13/do1304.xml&sSheet=/opinion/2006/08/13/ixopinion.html">Richard Perle</a> for <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/03/AR2006060300237_pf.html">suggesting negotiations</a> with Tehran over the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5039956.stm">Iranian nuclear program</a>, the American secretary of state now looms all the larger in the Washington firmament, after having successfully chaperoned 1701 to its debut.
<br /><br clear="all" />
That means <a href="http://www.antiwar.com/orig/lind1.html">the neocons</a> are still bleeding and <a href="http://www.insightmag.com/Media/MediaManager/Condi4.htm">reeling</a> from the wounds inflicted on their power and prestige by the <a href="http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/world/4114211.html">near-meltdown</a> of the American occupation in Iraq. The balance of power in Washington is shifting, as the reality of what professors <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/interview/2006/07/walt_mearsheimer.html">John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt</a> call "<a href="http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:LSnoULXeN9sJ:ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/Research/wpaper.nsf/rwp/RWP06-011/%24File/rwp_06_011_walt.pdf%2BJohn%2BJ.%2BMearsheimer%2Band%2BStephen%2BWalt&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=4">the Lobby</a>" reveals itself.
<br /><br clear="all" />
Who are you going to believe, the Lobby asked, us or <a href="http://thestressblog.com/2006/08/04/beirut-before-and-after/">your lying eyes</a>? As propagandists, not even the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFcKJGFsG2E">Soviets</a> were this bad.
<br /><br clear="all" />
As usual, <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060821fa_fact">Seymour Hersh has the inside dope</a>, and he depicts Israel's failed blitz as a dress rehearsal for the main event: an American <a href="http://www.alternet.org/story/40042/">confrontation with Iran</a>.

As the war becomes more deadly, costly and counter-productive each day, a growing majority of citizens want to see a change of course in Iraq and U.S. foreign policies that better reflect American values.

With mid-term elections approaching, Peace Action's Peace Voter 2006 campaign will bring the occupation of Iraq and other key foreign policy issues to the forefront of the electoral debate.

We will put our elected officials on record on critical peace and security issues and demand their commitment to a more responsible foreign policy for our country.

By making peace the top priority in 2006, you can make a big impact at the local level, helping to build a powerful movement of people willing to organize for peace on Election Day, and beyond. This November, let's hold Congress accountable to the rising tide of public opinion that's urging an end to the war in Iraq and a new direction for U.S. relations with the world.

<br />
An overwhelming majority of <b>Democrats - 79% - nationwide</b> said they are <b>glad that the three-term senator was defeated</b> by Lamont, who ran a powerful anti-Iraq war campaign. They also said Lamont's victory over one of the few pro-war Democrats in Washington makes them optimistic they can win control of at least one of the two houses of Congress in November.<br />
<br />
Our interactive survey, including interviews Wednesday and Thursday with 1,229 likely voting Democrats, also highlighted what Democrats across the country said they want to hear from their candidates -- a resolute opposition to the war. More than three-quarters of <b>Democrats (78%) said they want candidates who oppose the conflict</b>. Just 6% said they think their Democratic candidates should support the war. Another 13% said they want their candidates to take a middling stance somewhere between support and opposition. <br />
<br />
Our poll shows the <b>war is creating a unity in the Democratic Party</b>, and the Lamont candidacy both fed off that unity and helped it grow stronger. In a curious way, Joe Lieberman also helped unify the Democrats - <b>an overwhelming majority (71%)</b> said they were <b>unhappy with his decision to run as an independent</b> in the November general election.

Democratic Primary has brought talk of the McGovern - Anti-War Movement of the sixties. These two eras share much in common. This time there are major differences that people are overlooking.
<br /><br />
In the early seventies I was a young teenager that was caught up in the philosophy, music and the protest marches on tv. We were young and idealistic and most of all we were disgusted with the killing. At that time there were thousands getting shipped off to Vietnam only to make the nightly news by being documented as faceless cannon fodder returning home in a bodybag.
<br /><br />The War in Iraq is different in that an all volunteer army is being used now (unless you call 'Stop-Loss' the 21st century's conscription tool). There are a lot fewer deaths but the outrage at the uselessness of their sacrifice is just as great now as it was in the Vietnam War.
<br /><br />
There is another and even greater reason that this time the Anti-War Movement is of greater consequence. All of us middle aged, graying and bald ex-hippies and flower-children all are voters now. Think about it for a second. All of us who were revolutionary individualists have been absorbed by the 'Establishment'.
<br /><br />Much noise is being laid down hard and heavy that the Democratic Party is being taken over by the extreme left wing Anti-War element. The extreme left wing label they want to use is what is wrong with their analogy. We are centrist, moderates and progressives that are standing up to the current war-mongers.
<br /><br />
They want the old sixties meme to infer that we are all nut-cases. The danger we present to them today is that we have the power to vote them out of office if they do not reflect the now majority of Americans who want our troops out of Iraq. Lieberman is just a wake-up call to Democrats as well as Republicans. - fc

The Bush administration has drafted amendments to a war crimes law that would eliminate the risk of prosecution for political appointees, CIA officers and former military personnel for humiliating or degrading war prisoners, according to U.S. officials and a copy of the amendments.
<br /><br clear="all" />
Officials say the amendments would alter a U.S. law passed in the mid-1990s that criminalized violations of the Geneva Conventions, a set of international treaties governing military conduct in wartime.
<br /><br clear="all" />
"People have gotten worried, thinking that it's quite likely they might be under a microscope," said a U.S. official. Foreigners are using accusations of unlawful U.S. behavior as a way to rein in American power, the official said, and the amendments are partly meant to fend this off.
<br /><br clear="all" />
"This removal of [any] reference to humiliating and degrading treatment will be perceived by experts and probably allies as 'rewriting' " the Geneva Conventions, said retired Army Lt. Col. Geoffrey S. Corn, who was recently chief of the war law branch of the Army's Office of the Judge Advocate General. Others said the changes could affect how foreigners treat U.S. soldiers.
<br clear="all" /><br clear="all" />
The amendments would narrow the reach of the War Crimes Act, which now states in general terms that Americans can be prosecuted in federal criminal courts for violations of "Common Article 3" of the Geneva Conventions, which the United States ratified in 1949.

AMMAN (JT) - A group of American anti-war hunger strikers are scheduled to arrive in Jordan today to meet with Iraqi parliamentarians to discuss peacemaking in the war-ravaged country.
<br clear="all" /><br clear="all" />
During the meeting, the <b>Iraqi officials</b> will brief the activists on a <b>peace plan</b> they have been working on at the National Reconciliation Conference held in Cairo last week. CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin said: "It is a breakthrough for the US peace movement to meet directly with Iraqi parliamentarians working on a peace plan. <b>We hope to return to the US to build support for their plan</b>."
<br /><br clear="all" />
After their meeting here, the activists will travel to Lebanon to obtain a first- hand view of the destruction caused by the Israeli offensive.

The trip is being sponsored by <a href="http://www.codepinkalert.org//section.php?id=12" title="CODEPINK: Women for Peace"><span style="font: 13px verdana,arial,serif;">CODEPINK: Women for Peace</span></a> and the human rights group <a href="http://www.globalexchange.org/" title="Global Exchange">Global Exchange</a>.

This resolution presents the best hope for an end to the rapidly rising civilian toll in this deeply troubled region and should be approved in Congress.
<br /><br clear="all" />
The United States bears a special moral responsibility in this crisis as the only nation that can bring an end to the violence and relieve the humanitarian catastrophe that has enveloped the people of Lebanon and Israel. Regrettably, Mr. Bush and Secretary of State Rice are all too clearly doing what they can to stall a ceasefire. Each day of delay leads to more unnecessary civilian deaths in both Lebanon and Israel.
<br /><br clear="all" />
Achieving peace in the region requires that the government of Lebanon establish full military control over all of its territory, with Hezbollah disarmed and the rocket attacks stopped. However, it is clear that the Lebanese government is too weak to accomplish these tasks, so an international peacekeeping force is required.
<br /><br clear="all" />
Israel has a right to defend itself against military attacks, but its response to Hezbollah has involved attacks on Lebanese civilians and the destruction of vast amounts of civilian infrastructure totally unrelated to Hezbollah. Fully one-fourth of Lebanese civilians are now refugees. The current Israeli policy of declaring any civilian remaining in southern Lebanon as a target subject to bombardment is simply immoral and has already led to hundreds of civilian deaths, with more certain with each passing day.
<br /><br clear="all" />
The current U.S. policy of delay in favor of continued war is likely to have great consequences for the region, the world and the safety of our nation and its allies. Congress needs to step forward and call for an immediate cessation of hostilities by passing Representative Kucinich's resolution.
<blockquote style="background-color:#ffffff !important;">

<span style="font-size:150%; font-weight:bold;">Support an Immediate Cease-Fire in Lebanon</span></a>
<br /><br clear="all" />
I'm writing to ask that you support and co-sponsor House Concurrent Resolution 450, introduced by Representative Kucinich of Ohio. This resolution is the best chance for an end to rising civilian casualities in the region and should be passed by Congress right away.
<br /><br clear="all" />
How many innocent lives will be lost -- on both sides of the conflict -- before America steps up and takes a leadership role? We have a moral obligation to stop the violence and initiate efforts towards peace in the region -- which is exactly what this resolution does.
<br /><br clear="all" />
An immediate cease-fire will put an end to the needless loss of life. Multi-party talks are the only way for all the parties to air their grievances peacefully and come to a settlement. Finally, an international peacekeeping force will clearly be necessary to implement U.N. Resolution 1559 and disarm the militias such as Hezbollah that threaten Israel and destabilize the entire region.
<br /><br clear="all" />
So I ask that you support Representative Kucinich's resolution and demonstrate American leadership towards a peaceful resolution of this conflict. I look forward to your response to my letter.
<br /><br clear="all" />
Sincerely,

<span style="font-size:140%; font-weight:bold;">Dear Mr. President, Simply Staying the Course in Iraq is Not Working</span><br /><br />
Washington, DC - With violence exploding in Iraq, there is little evidence that the Bush Administration and Congressional Republicans have a coherent strategy to stabilize Iraq. Thousands have been killed in sectarian and insurgent violence in recent months, and now the American people have been told that thousands more U.S. troops will be redeployed into an urban war zone in Baghdad. The President's current approach is not sustainable. Today, the Senate and House Democratic Leaders and ranking members from the key national security committees wrote to the President calling upon him to begin the phased redeployment of U.S. forces before the end of the year, to transform the U.S. mission, and to launch a real diplomatic and reconstruction effort to help stabilize Iraq. These concrete recommendations draw upon the Levin/Reed Iraq policy amendment overwhelmingly supported in the Senate. Simply staying the course behind the President's failed policy is not in the interests of our troops, taxpayers or national security.

The President<br />

Dear Mr. President:<br /><br />
While the world has been focused on the crisis in the Middle East, Iraq has exploded in violence. Some 6,000 Iraqis were killed in May and June, and sectarian and insurgent violence continues to claim American and Iraqi lives at an alarming rate. In the face of this onslaught, one can only conclude that the Baghdad security plan you announced five weeks ago is in great jeopardy.
<br /><br />
Despite the latest evidence that your Administration lacks a coherent strategy to stabilize Iraq and achieve victory, there has been virtually no diplomatic effort to resolve sectarian differences, no regional effort to establish a broader security framework, and no attempt to revive a struggling reconstruction effort. Instead, we learned of your plans to redeploy an additional 5,000 U.S. troops into an urban war zone in Baghdad. Far from implementing a comprehensive "Strategy for Victory" as you promised months ago, your Administration's strategy appears to be one of trying to avoid defeat.
<br /><br />
Meanwhile, U.S. troops and taxpayers continue to pay a high price as your Administration searches for a policy. Over 2,500 Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice and over 18,000 others have been wounded. The Iraq war has also strained our military and constrained our ability to deal with other challenges. Readiness levels for the Army are at lows not seen since Vietnam, as virtually no active Army non-deployed combat brigade is prepared to perform its wartime missions. American taxpayers have already contributed over $300 billion and each week we stay in Iraq adds nearly $3 billion more to our record budget deficit.
<br /><br />
In the interests of American national security, our troops, and our taxpayers, the open-ended commitment in Iraq that you have embraced cannot and should not be sustained.
<br /><br />
Rather, we continue to believe that it is time for Iraqis to step forward and take the lead for securing and governing their own country. This is the principle enshrined in the "United States Policy in Iraq Act" enacted last year. This law declares 2006 to be a year of "significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty, with Iraqi security forces taking the lead for the security of a free and sovereign Iraq, thereby creating the conditions for the phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq." Regrettably, your policy seems to be moving in the opposite direction.
<br /><br />
This legislation made clear that Iraqi political leaders must be informed that American patience, blood and treasure are not unlimited. We were disappointed that you did not convey this message to Prime Minister Maliki during his recent visit. Reducing the U.S. footprint in Iraq will not only give the Iraqis a greater incentive to take the lead for the security of their own nation, but will also allow U.S. forces to be able to respond to contingencies affecting the security of the United States elsewhere in the world.
<br /><br />
We believe that a phased redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq should begin before the end of 2006. U.S. forces in Iraq should transition to a more limited mission focused on counterterrorism, training and logistical support of Iraqi security forces, and force protection of U.S. personnel.
<br /><br />
Additionally, every effort should be made to urge the Iraqis to take the steps necessary to achieve a broad-based and sustainable political settlement, including amending the constitution to achieve a fair sharing of power and resources. It is also essential to disarm the militias and ensure forces loyal to the national government. Finally, an international conference should be convened to persuade other governments to be more involved, and to secure the resources necessary to finance Iraq's reconstruction and rebuild its economy.
<br /><br />
Mr. President, simply staying the course in Iraq is not working. We need to take a new direction. We believe these recommendations comprise an effective alternative to the current open-ended commitment which is not producing the progress in Iraq we would all like to see. Thank you for your careful consideration of these suggestions.

After meeting some of the ladies from the Washington D.C. chapter of Code Pink during our participation in the <a href="http://fc-politics.blogspot.com/2005/09/washington-dc-sept-24th-2005.html">War Protest March of Sept. 24th 2005</a>, I am honored to help further their cause. These ladies were very helpful to my wife and I in negotiating the Metro in my wheelchair. I was very much grateful for their help and am very much a supporter of their efforts.

This announcement of the future meeting with Iraqi Parliamentarians in search for peace in their country is a much welcomed turn of events. I will be following this development and post any news on this blog. Please join me in support of the Peace Movement and the return of our troops from Iraq. - fc

<span style="font-size:160%; font-weight:bold;">W</span>e have exciting news to share with you today! After being rebuffed in our numerous attempts to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, including setting up "Camp Al-Maliki" across from the Iraqi Embassy and publishing an <a href="http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=160840896&url_num=5&url=http://www.codepinkalert.org/article.php?id=1138">open letter</a> to him in one of the largest Iraqi newspapers, we received an amazing invitation: <b>Five members of the Iraqi Parliament who are working on a Reconciliation Plan to end the violence in their country contacted us.</b> Moved by the commitment of the long-term fasters and dismayed by their prime minister's refusal to meet with us, <b>these parliamentarians asked us to join them in Amman, Jordan next week to discuss their Reconciliation Plan</b>, on condition that we break our long-term fast with them!
<br /><br />
We are thrilled. It will be such a breakthrough for the US peace movement to be working directly with Iraqi peacemakers, and what better way to break our fast than with members of the Iraqi government seeking an end to the violence. So next week, we'll be on our way to Jordan. In addition to a group of long-term fasters, we are inviting Congresspeople, academics, and notable journalists to join us.
